The company was organized in 1898 to construct a rail line from Bonner's Ferry north to the international boundary (26 miles). It was controlled by a Great Northern subsidiary, the Kootenay Railway and Navigation Company, until the latter's 1911 dissolution, when it was absorbed into the GN. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
